Martina Topley-Bird

Martina Topley-Bird, a pioneer of the trip-hop movement, makes a comeback after 11 years with her self produced album Forever I Wait. Topley-Bird was just 15 when she featured on Tricky’s Aftermath and a few years later they joined forces again, creating his masterpiece Maxinquaye. Despite her latest album sounding mature, Topley-Bird still manages to recreate the iconic Bristol sound; a nervous drum beat paired with sensual and distorted vocals cast a spell on the listener,  leaving you nostalgic for the 90s even if you’re too young to remember them. The theme of loss and hurt matches her melancholic tone throughout and this album sees her looking inwards, using her writing for introspection. This work of art will leave you reminiscing upon your own past and maybe even lead to some introspection of your own.
