Album Review: Debrief, Spin It

Words by Ben O’Regan
South Coast-based Drum’n’Bass label, Renaissance UK have landed recent success with their compilation release LP001. It reveals an untapped reservoir of bass-driven, eclectic rollers. 2021 looks to follow this formula for RUK, with Debrief and MC Chronic Drop combining on Spin, a low sub merger, saturated with layers of enticing snares and an industrious soundscape aura, reminiscent of Ray Keith’s infamous Dread Recordings.
“Having produced for close to 6 years now, sound and music for film has always inspired me to think over a theme before I get my head down and get stuck into my production,” states Debrief.
“I actually had Spin It sitting around for a while and didn’t know quite how to finish it. I left the intro quite stripped back so I never felt like it was a finished product, but after hitting up Chronic Drop and getting that vocal in there for the build-up, it just felt like everything suddenly glued together really nicely. It’s definitely a bit more of a heavy track from myself, I think it represents what I would play in my sets quite well.”

Looking to the future, Debrief has quietly been preparing an EP with completion expected in early 2021, along with various experimental singles which bring their own unique flair to the D&B sound.
A weighty track with energy and intent, not one to be missed for UK bassheads.
